In an act of horrific animal cruelty, Marc Turnbull, 38, shot cross-breed Rocky with an air rifle six times. After inflicting further injury to the helpless pooch by hitting him with a shovel, Turnbull left Rocky to die alone in a ditch.
It wasn’t until three days later that the weak and wounded Rocky was found by a member of the public.
According to the RSPCA, x-rays showed that Rocky had been shot five times in the head and once in the leg. He also had a large open wound to the back of his head, where he had been hit by the shovel.
The 38-year-old, from Northampton; who ironically was traced through the details recorded on Rocky’s microchip, claimed that inflicting the appalling injuries was his only option after he failed to sell Rocky online.
Having admitted to three charges of causing unnecessary suffering to Rocky, Turnball was jailed for 20 weeks at Northampton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. He was also banned from keeping animals for 20 years.
RSPCA inspector Michelle McNab said: “This was a truly unbelievable case that involved immense suffering to the dog.
“Fortunately, Rocky was found and amazingly he survived. He has since been re-homed to a loving family.”
